STUC writes to Trinity Mirror on Daily Record & Sunday Mail job losses

July 14th 2011

Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary today wrote to Mark Hollinshead, Managing Director, Nationals at Trinity Mirror to ask that current plans to cut jobs at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail are reassessed in light of News International’s current difficulties.

Mr Smith said:

“The STUC strongly agrees with the NUJ that it makes no sense to continue with the planned job cuts when a huge opportunity has now presented itself for Trinity Mirror to re-establish the Record and Mail as Scotland’s premier popular newspapers. With its major competitor in such serious difficulty, now is a time for investment at Trinity Mirror in Scotland, not cuts.

“I have offered to meet with Mr Hollinshead to examine ways in which the situation might be resolved to the benefit of all parties concerned”.
