On Thursday (24 February) Scottish trade unions will gather in Glasgow to explore the skills required for union members in social networking, both in the workplace and at home. Delegates from around Scotland will look at “Everyday Skills for the Digital Age: There is a Better Way” at the 3rd Annual Scottish Union Learning Everyday Skills Event.

This national event, to be held at the STUC Centre in Glasgow, will bring together 80 Union Learning Reps from workplaces throughout Scotland. Delegates will participate in themed sessions on issues relating to social networking, blogging, and IT skills. Participants will also link to the STUC’s Better Way campaign and explore how basic economics relate to all workers through literacy and numeracy.

Notes for editors

Scottish Union Learning was launched in May 2008. The Scottish Government allocated just under £4.25m to Scottish Union Learning and union-led learning initiatives until March 2011. Scottish Union Learning works in partnership with unions to drive forward trade union led learning in Scotland and administers the Scottish Union Learning Fund (SULF), the Learning Fund and the Development Fund, which are supported by the European Social Fund.
The Scottish Union Learning Everyday Skills Event is held annually. It enables trade unions to explore methods of supporting those with everyday skills needs and raise the profile of everyday skills issues in the workplace.

Union Learning Reps provide literacy and numeracy support in their workplaces to many of the 644,000 trade unionists in Scotland who are affiliated to the STUC.
