Commenting as the STUC published a letter to George Osborne in advance of the Spending Review, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said:

“The evidence is mounting that the Chancellor’s emergency Budget plans cannot be implemented without inflicting profound damage on an already weak economy. In this letter, we call on the Chancellor to urgently reconsider his strategy which we believe will condemn Scotland to a prolonged period of high unemployment and stagnant growth.

“The Chancellor continually argues that his swingeing cuts are necessary to placate predatory financial markets. He is unable to provide evidence to this effect because market prices have long told a different story.

“Deep and immediate cuts to public spending are not unavoidable. The proposed cuts are not, as Coalition Ministers argue, ‘fair and progressive’. If the Chancellor cares at all about Scottish workers and communities, he must use the opportunity of the Spending Review to revisit his ideologically driven budget strategy.”
