The 14th Annual Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) Black Workers Conference will take place this weekend when black trade union members will meet to discuss issues affecting black people in the workplace and wider Scottish society.

Hilda Smith from the EIS who will Chair the Conference said

“This year’s conference takes place in challenging times as slow economic recovery continues and we face severe and unnecessary austerity measures that the STUC believe will only add to current high levels of economic inactivity within the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) population.

“It is vitally important that we continue to promote, and be proud of, our diverse and multi cultural society and continue to fight against far right organisations who may use any unrest caused by austerity measures for their own unpalatable aims.

“We also have to ensure that work continues to further increase the participation of BME workers in all levels of Scottish public and political life and we would hope that next year’s elections in the Scottish Parliament see at least some members form the BME community returned as MSPs.”
