Commenting on today’s labour market statistics, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:

“Today’s figures continue the worrying trend of lower employment and higher unemployment. The Scottish labour market is performing better relative to the UK but, as the First Minister argued at this morning’s National Economic Forum, there is no room whatsoever for complacency. The STUC believes that strong action is required at Scottish, UK and G20 level to address the deteriorating economy and labour market.

“The Scottish Government must redouble its efforts to ensure that there is a comprehensive package of support available to assist the unemployed and those at risk of redundancy. This should include targeted, short-term wage subsidies and training support.

“The UK Government must bring forward a new stimulus package as part of Budget 2009 if not before. The STUC notes that fiscal stimulus measures in the UK to date are significantly below the average for the major world economies.

“The G20 must agree co-ordinated action to boost global demand”.
