Speaking in advance of the rally and lobby of Parliament organised by the Communication Workers’ Union, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:
“The STUC strongly supports the CWU’s ‘Keep the Post Public’ campaign. It makes no sense whatsoever for the Government to proceed with part-privatisation of Royal Mail on the basis of the hugely flawed Hooper Report; a report which singularly failed to provide an economic or social rationale for privatisation.
“The Government should instead focus on delivering more product and service innovation for customers, overhauling the unfair regulatory regime and delivering the investment that postal workers have been demanding for years.
“Since the financial crisis began in summer 2007, the STUC has argued that Government action should be consistent with a shift to a fairer, more sustainable economic and social model. Nationalising the debt and privatising the profits of Royal Mail will do nothing to enhance the service to customers but will act to further embed the failed economic orthodoxies of the past”.
