STUC Black Workers Committee Statement on Racist Abuse Towards Politicians

August 25th 2020

Following on from reports of abuse faced by Humza Yousaf MSP, and previous reports of abuse faced by Anas Sarwar MSP and BME local councillors, the STUC’s Black Workers Committee stands in solidarity with all politicians in Scotland from a BME background.

As Black and Ethnic Minority trade unionists, fighting for racial equality in Scotland, we are concerned that such instances of abuse, threats and hatred could deter other BME people, especially BME women, young people, and people with a disability, from participating in politics. Whether that be through their trade unions, community organising or political parties, we want to see more BME people reaching their full potential and representing their communities without fear.

Racist threats and intimidation towards politicians harm our democracy. We must all stand together to defend our democracy and rid our society of racism and discrimination in all its forms.
