Act together, Act now, to rebuild collective prosperity
The current crisis provides an opportunity to create a new economic architecture that reconnects a strong, flexible economy to the living standards of all, not just to residents of the penthouse. Most of Scotland agrees. More income equality, not less; defend jobs now through government intervention; build sustainable and healthy jobs through proper regulation, investment in manufacturing, housing and the green technologies; support a strong innovative public sector delivering equality of opportunity and outcome; plan a just transition to a greener economy built on fairer international development.
The STUC's Agenda for Rebuilding Collective Prosperity calls for policies and interventions, both immediate and longer term, which can achieve these aims. It is essential that governments at Scottish, UK and European level grasp this opportunity. It is vital that wider civic Scotland and its communities are fully engaged in the formation of a new vision for collective prosperity in Scotland and across the UK.
About the campaign
STUC has contacted thousands of civic, community and campaigning organisations across Scotland to seek their views and support.
We will launch a budget for Rebuilding Collective Prosperity in November 2009 and a Manifesto for Rebuilding Collective Prosperity in 2010.
If you wish to suggest contributions for either of these documents please email via this link info@stuc.org.uk
We will work with Scottish charities in the campaign to Put People First in the run up to the G20 Finance Ministers meeting in St Andrews on 7th November
We will hold a major joint conference with Scottish Churches to campaign for greater income equality and justice and work together with Scotland's local communities to campaign for a Scottish Living Wage
We will work with the Scottish Council of Voluntary Organisations to bring together Scottish society to discuss the way forward
We will hold a major conference in partnership with public service user groups and launch a Scottish Public Services Charter.
We will campaign with our sister organisations around the world for a just transition to a greener world and hold a major climate change conference to take our campaign forward.
We will show through a range of events, conferences and publications that collective prosperity cannot be achieved without fighting discrimination based on gender, race, disability, age, religion or sexuality whether it occurs in the workplace or wider society.
We don’t have all the answers, but nor do the bankers, politicians and consultants who got us into this mess …
