STUC Response to Scottish Government Statement on Public Sector Pensions

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) welcomes the tone and much of the content of the statement made by John Swinney, Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth, on the crisis facing members of public sector pension schemes. In recognising that the proposals put forward by the Coalition Government to increase contributions are unfair and unjust, the Cabinet Secretary shows understanding of the damage the proposals will do to ordinary public service workers at a time when public sector pay freezes are already reducing their standard of living by hundreds and in many cases thousands of pounds per year.

STUC Youth Conference 2011 – A Better Way for Young People

The 71st Annual STUC Youth Conference will take place in Glasgow at the STUC Centre, over the coming weekend, Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June, 2011. The Conference takes place during growing uncertainty for young people in Scotland. Over the weekend young trade unionists from across Scotland will debate a number of issues including, youth unemployment, protecting public services, education and housing.

STUC Warns Against Complacency Following Reduction in Workplace Fatalities

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) has given a cautious welcome to the news this morning that workplace fatalities have fallen significantly in Scotland. The HSE have released figures for the year to 31 March 2011 showing that fatal injuries at work have fallen from 23 in 2009/10 to 15 this year.
