As G20 Finance Ministers start to gather in St Andrews today, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said: “Last year’s global financial crisis was the most dramatic since the great depression and yet we continue to await serious action to address the causes of the crisis. Addressing the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) annual Women’s conference in the Caird Hall Dundee today, STUC General Secretary, Grahame Smith, in a wide ranging speech will call on the Scottish Government to abandon its strategy of council tax freezes and small business tax cuts and pursue a more focused strategy which is designed to protect jobs, support growth, and cut poverty as detailed in the STUC budget submission to the Scottish government.

Commenting on the labour market statistics published today, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said: "Today's figures confirm another substantial rise in Scottish unemployment and it must be noted that the rise in both International Labour Organisation (ILO) and claimant count unemployment is proportionately higher in Scotland than for the UK as a whole.

Trade unionists, politicians, faith and community groups will today (Saturday 28 November 2009) march through Glasgow’s streets in a visible demonstration against racism and fascism. Organised by the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC), the Annual St Andrew’s Day Anti Racism March and Rally will show a Scotland united against racism, and in difficult economic times will remind people of the dangers of allowing prejudice and discrimination to go unchallenged.
