Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary Grahame Smith, has signed up to a letter sent by Scottish politicians and community leaders to the Foreign Secretary and First Minister on the worsening situation in the Gaza strip.

Speaking after the Monetary Policy Committee decided to cut interest rates by half a percentage point to 1.5%, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:
“Although this substantial cut is welcome, it seems inevitable that another cut of similar magnitude will be necessary next month. It is therefore disappointing that the MPC didn’t opt for a full percentage point cut today.

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) have expressed alarm at reports that five out of twenty of the UK’s largest private sector companies are announcing intentions to close final salary pension schemes to all employees within the next few years.
The STUC believe these companies are using the recession as a cover to escape a pension obligations problem that was largely of their own making and that valuations of future liabilities based on the current state of the stock market is short sighted and wrong.

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) has welcomed the decision of the Court of Appeal to increase a discounted fine of £3750, imposed on a Highland based company with a similar discounted penalty of £30000. The fine was imposed following an incident where a wheeled loader rolled from an articulate lorry killing 24 year old Christina Fraser who was travelling in a car behind.
