1st : Sandra White MSP to address Glasgow Learning Forum
Glasgow list MSP Sandra White will address tomorrows (Friday 2nd November) meeting of the Glasgow Learning Forum where she will speak on her views of trade unions and their wider learning agenda. It will also give members of the forum an opportunity to raise questions on the new Scottish Government’s attitude to skill and lifelong learning.
5th : STUC condemns bullying attitude of Health Authority to staff sickness
The Scottish Trades Union Congress has joined with Unison in condemning the approach taken by the largest health authority in Scotland to managing sickness absence management within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
6th : STUC APPALLED AT INSULT TO BEREAVED FAMILY
The Scottish Trades Union Congress has expressed anger at the fines imposed on ABF Grain Products Ltd and TNT Logistics following the death of agency truck driver, Graham Meldrum. The two companies were fined £19500 and £14000 respectively after entering guilty pleas to breaches of health and safety regulations.

The Scottish Trades Union Congress is to meet MSPs later today to discuss possible changes in Scottish legislation which will reverse the House of Lords decision that will deny pleural plaques sufferers their rightful compensation.
7th : STUC on new Pay Statistics
Reacting to National Statistics figures released today, Stephen Boyd, STUC Assistant Secretary said: “These new statistics show that, in terms of pay, Scotland is performing strongly compared with other nations and regions of the UK. “However, the positive headline figures mask serious problems such as the regional disparities within Scotland. The situation whereby median gross weekly pay is £424 in East Renfrewshire but only £302 in Moray is unacceptable.
7th : STUC Concern at Rise in Gender Pay Gap Figures
The STUC today expressed its concern at the new gender pay gap figures which reveals that in Scotland, the pay gap has actually widened by 1.2% to 14.9%. Commenting on today’s figures, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary, said:

Over 130 women workers from across Scotland will gather in Glasgow on Tuesday and Wednesday 13-14 November 2007 to call for more action to tackle violence against women. A wide ranging agenda will see debates on human trafficking, abortion rights, closing the gender pay gap and poverty.

14th : STUC General Secretary Warns of Increased Human Trafficking Ahead of Commonwealth Games
Making his first speech to the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) Women’s Conference since his appointment as General Secretary, Grahame Smith today (Wednesday 14 November 2007) spoke of the challenges faced by the trade union movement in highlighting and combating human trafficking in Scotland. He reminded delegates that much of Scotland’s prosperity in recent centuries was achieved on the foundation of slavery and drew parallels with the vile trafficking trade of the 21st Century.

Addressing the seventh annual Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) Learning Conference today (Thursday, 15th November 2007) at Hampden Park, Glasgow Cabinet Secretary for Education & Lifelong Learning, Fiona Hyslop MSP announced that the Scottish Government is committing just under £4.25m over the next three years to union learning in Scotland.
30th : Temporary Agency Workers Directive
Following a meeting in Dublin of the Presidents and General Secretaries of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU), the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC), and the Welsh Trades Union Congress (WTUC), a united call has been made for the critical meeting of the European Union (EU) Social Affairs Ministers on Wednesday (5th December 2007) to break a longstanding deadlock and agree on a new deal for agency workers.
