Reacting to news that three Scottish Remploy workplaces are to close and another five have been placed under serious threat, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said:
“The STUC is appalled at this decision. At a time when disabled people are being disproportionately affected by rising unemployment, the Government has at a stroke thrown over 100 disabled people in Scotland on the dole and threatened the jobs of 150 more.
“The argument that these workplaces are not ‘financially viable’ doesn’t stack up. It is hardly viable to consign disabled people to long-term unemployment. The human, social and economic costs of today’s announcement will be significant.
“The Remploy workforce is massively committed and proud. They will be devastated by today’s announcement but the Government should be aware that these workplaces will not be allowed to close quietly”.
