Coalition deal spells disaster for the economy

May 12th 2010

Commenting on the Tory/Liberal coalition deal, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary Grahame Smith said:

“This deal spells disaster for the economy. Savage cuts in public spending this year could well tip our fragile economy back into recession.

“The Liberal Democrats would do well to remember that, by an overwhelming majority, the electorate voted for parties opposed to cuts this year. Their Cabinet seats and promise of electoral reform will be no consolation to the hundreds of thousands of workers, in the public and private sectors, who will lose their jobs if these cuts go ahead, not to mention the impact on some of the most vulnerable in our society who depend on public services.

“I will be seeking an early meeting with the new Scottish Secretary to discuss the impact of these cuts on the Scottish economy and how the new Government proposes to get people back into work”
