On Friday (15 May) trade unionists
throughout Scotland will
mobilise to get out the vote for the Euro Elections and keep out the fascist
BNP. The anti-racist organisation
Searchlight, has designated Friday 15 May as “Union Friday” in its Hope not Hate
campaign, and is working with trade unions across the UK.
The Scottish Trades Union Congress
is co-ordinating activity across Scotland, to make people aware of the
dangers of the BNP. From Inverness to
Dumfries, trade unions will be warning of the
racist policies of the BNP which play on people’s fears, and urging voters to
turn out on Thursday 4 June.
Speaking on the eve of “Union Friday”, STUC General Secretary Grahame Smith
said:
“Whatever people’s views are of
Europe, there is a clear threat that the BNP
will be spreading their politics of hate to try to win seats in the European
Parliament. The BNP will be using the current recession to play on people’s
fears. The trade union movement has a
crucial role to expose their racist policies, and encourage people to vote
against this on 4 June”.
