The STUC has today called for fairer local tax bands and to retain a property tax, rejecting the Scottish Government’s current 'Local Income Tax' plans which would remove accountability and be financially unsustainable.
The STUC believes there must see a review of the Council Tax which makes banding fair.
Finding the fair way to tax capital assets
In the response policy document, which you can read here, the STUC has outlined its opposition to the current proposals on the grounds of particular concerns surrounding
- Democracy and Local Accountability
- Support for a property based element within the overall taxation system
- The financial black hole created by the proposal for a 3p rate and the implications for local authority service delivery
- The absence of taxation on unearned income within the proposal
- The collection difficulties and associated complexities
