The Scottish Trades Union Congress have welcomed the decision by the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning to exempt colleges from the need to comply fully with the current legislation governing charitable status, but retain Ministers’ powers over the sector.
STUC Assistant Secretary Mary Senior said:
“Staff working in the college sector will be delighted with Fiona Hyslop’s decision. The STUC is pleased that the Scottish Government has chosen to take the action which will ensure colleges are accountable to the Scottish Parliament and the public at large, whilst at the same time allowing colleges to retain their charitable status and the benefits this provides”.
Ms Senior added:
“The Government’s proposed course of action, helps to maintain colleges as a vital public service, providing learning opportunities to develop Scotland’s economy and enhance social and civic participation. The STUC will be urging all Scottish political parties to support this proposal in the Scottish Parliament”.
