Reacting to National Statistics figures released today, Stephen Boyd, STUC Assistant Secretary said:
“These new statistics show that, in terms of pay, Scotland is performing strongly compared with other nations and regions of the UK.
“However, the positive headline figures mask serious problems such as the regional disparities within Scotland. The situation whereby median gross weekly pay is £424 in East Renfrewshire but only £302 in Moray is unacceptable.
“The statistics also prove that Scotland’s trade unions are right to be concerned about the wildly disproportionate share of wealth going to the top ten per cent of earners. It is neither desirable nor sustainable for the top ten per cent to be paid double the earnings of the bottom 50% of the workforce.
“This situation hits social cohesion, feeds into house price inflation and has a detrimental impact on staff loyalty and commitment”.
