The STUC has criticised the £4 million fine imposed on Network Rail following the Paddington Rail disaster at Ladbroke Grove and renewed calls for the Government to review the penalties that can be imposed on negligent companies.
Following the sentence, STUC Assistant Secretary Ian Tasker said “On this occasion it is disappointing that this fine will have to be paid out of the public purse for an accident that happened when the rail infrastructure was operated by privately owned Railtrack.
“The public is paying for the harsh realities of privatisation in the absence of any recourse to the defunct company and the failure to secure individual prosecutions for corporate manslaughter.
“This is not justice for those who lost loved ones, it is an insult.”
