STUC on Job Losses at Ferguson’s Shipyard
Commenting on news that 99 workers will lose their jobs at Ferguson’s shipyard at Port Glasgow, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said:
“These job losses represent a massive blow for the individuals involved, the Inverclyde area and Scottish manufacturing industry in general.
“These job losses highlight, once again, the need for the Scottish Executive to adopt a strategic approach to public procurement. ‘Warlike’ equipment is exempt from EU public procurement rules and other member states routinely use this flexibility in support of their own shipbuilding industries.
“It is time the Executive shed its institutional timidity in the face of all things European and stood up for Scottish industry”.
