FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 27 November 2006
SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT CELEBRATES LOCAL UNION LEARNING
The first Trade Union Week will be held at the Scottish Parliament 4 – 7 December 2006. On Wednesday 6 December, Union Learning Representatives (ULRs) will travel to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh to participate in a meeting with MSPs and Parliamentary Assistants to discuss the lifelong learning agenda.
The meeting will include a presentation of trade union learning achievements and a discussion of how local ULRs see the path of trade union led lifelong learning in the future. ULRs will have an opportunity to highlight their main concerns regarding lifelong learning by directly engaging with members of the Scottish Parliament – both its successes and where it falls short. This opportunity will give ULRs and Local Learning Forums a chance to influence the lifelong learning agenda throughout Scotland.
Local Learning Forums are being piloted in Motherwell, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Fife. Within the Highlands & Islands, successful forums already exist in Inverness, Fort William and Orkney. Many of these Local Learning Forums across Scotland will hold local events leading up to, and during, Trade Union Week.
STUC Deputy General Secretary, Grahame Smith, said:
“Trade Union Week will give Union Learning Reps an opportunity to showcase their experience in meeting the learning needs of workers in Scotland.
“It is testament to the hard work and dedication of ULRs and the commitment from MSPs to the learning agenda in Scotland.
“The STUC hopes that by giving ULRs the opportunity to work hand in hand with their representatives in the Scottish Parliament, we can influence lifelong learning to meet the needs of all adult learners in Scotland.”
