STUC General Secretary welcomes Government change of tone on Firefighters' Dispute
Commenting on the discussions which are taking place between the Fire Brigades Union and the Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott, STUC General Secretary Bill Speirs said:
"The fact that the FBU and the Government are now engaged in face to face discussions is welcome. We of course do not know what the outcome of the discussions will be, and it is a real pity that it has taken so long for the Government to come to the table, but there is absolutely nothing to be lost for either side in trying to reach some accommodation before Tuesday of next week, when the first firefighters' strike is due to begin.
"Industrial action in the fire service has many dangers, and I know that firefighters are absolutely not relishing it. It is also the case that everyone recognises that the "crushing" of the firefighters and their union would result in a demoralised, demotivated service which would be undoubtedly disastrous for the country. That is why it is vital that the employers - and the Government standing behind them - recognise the need to pay firefighters what they are worth as a professional body operating in very dangerous situations."
