Trade unionists unite to challenge racism and fascism!

November 28th 2002

NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 28 NOVEMBER 2002

TRADE UNIONISTS UNITE TO CHALLENGE RACISM AND FASCISM!

St Andrew's Day March and Rally Against Racism & Fascism 11am Saturday 30th November 2002

The STUC is expecting trade unionists and other campaigners, in their thousands, to join them on the streets of Glasgow this Saturday in a march to campaign against Racism and Fascism. This is an annual event, which was first organised as a response to the BNP trying to claim St. Andrew's Day as their own, at which many trade unions, including the Fire Brigades Union, are consistently represented.

This event has also received support from the leadership of every political party within the Scottish Parliament and statements of support are attached from all political leaders, including the First Minister. Please feel free to use the copy within the document attached in your coverage, which will all appear in the programme that accompanies this event. They include statements and articles from:

Rt Hon Jack McConnell MSP, First Minister for Scotland and Leader of the Scottish Labour Party;

Rt Hon Jim Wallace QC MSP, Deputy First Minister for Scotland and Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats;

John Swinney MSP, Leader of the Scottish National Party;

Tommy Sheridan MSP, Convenor, Scottish Socialist Party;

David McLetchie MSP, Leader of the Scottish Conservative Party; and

Robin Harper MSP, Scottish Green Party.

The march will move off at 11am from Blythswood Square, Glasgow, and will be followed by a rally at the Glasgow City Halls, Candleriggs at 12 noon, which will be Chaired by Asifa Hussain, Vice-Chair, STUC Black Workers' Committee.
