STUC General Secretary Addresses Civil Service Strike Rally
Speaking at today's (Friday 5 November) civil service strike and rally at the Pavilion Theatre, Renfield Street, Glasgow, STUC General Secretary, Bill Speirs, said:
"I am pleased to address this rally because you are standing up for yourselves, and for our communities."
"I regret that this strike should be necessary. Westminster Government Ministers regularly talk about how much they appreciate the work and commitment of our public servants who are delivering for our whole society, but particularly the poor, the unemployed and the vulnerable."
"Telling them that they are going to be sacked is a very strange way of showing that appreciation. Axing 100,000 civil servants will be a disaster."
"Fortunately, the Scottish Executive has made it clear that they will not bow to Whitehall and axe their own staff."
