NEWS RELEASE Friday 15 October
STUC calls for revitalised democracy at European Social Forum in London.
The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) will today, (Friday 15 October) call for democracy in politics, the workplace and the economy to be revitalised. STUC Assistant Secretary Mary Senior, is one of two Scottish speakers to be addressing plenary sessions of the European Social Forum, taking place at the Alexandra Palace in London.
The European Social Forum is a giant gathering for everyone who wants to see global justice, workers' rights and a sustainable society. The STUC will be contributing to the plenary debate on a Democratic and Social Europe.
STUC Assistant Secretary Mary Senior will draw attention to the declining participation in elections in the UK, and will say we have to "challenge disillusionment, re-engage people with democratic processes, and encourage people to recognise they have rights and responsibilities".
Ms Senior will also say that we need democracy in the workplace, to get fairness for workers and equality at work. She will also point to the growing use of the Private Finance Initiative, and the World Trade Organisations General Agreement in Trade on Services, as encroaching on democratic control of essential public services.
