STUC welcomes review of DTI Manufacturing Strategy
The STUC today warmly welcomed publication of the DTI's Review of Government Manufacturing Strategy and in particular the creation of a new Manufacturing Forum responsible for implementing the priorities outlined in the report. The DTI approach acknowledges that industry and stakeholder buy-in is essential for the strategy to be successful.
Stephen Boyd, STUC Assistant Secretary said,
"Despite its ongoing problems, Scottish manufacturing industry can have a bright future if we get the policy right. The Scottish Executive must work with trade unions and other partners to complement and build on the DTI strategy by:
· Encouraging Scottish companies to invest more in capital equipment and skills; · Ensuring that Scottish manufacturers are able to compete effectively and within the rules for future public procurement contracts; and, · Effectively tackling Scotland's productivity deficit. The Executive must seek to create an institutional structure that encourages and supports good employment practices and partnership at work".
