STUC JOINS BASQUE TRADE UNIONS TO CONDEMN "CRIMINAL" KILLINGS IN MADRID
The Scottish Trades Union Congress has today condemned this morning's murder of civilians in Madrid, and has received a denunciation of the killings from ELA, the trade union centre linked to the Basque Nationalist Party.
STUC General Secretary Bill Speirs said:
"The killings in Madrid are a brutal, murderous attack on ordinary working people worthy of as much condemnation as the murders carried out by Franco's fascists.
If they were indeed carried out by the ETA organisation, then ETA has demonstrated that it is an anti- worker, anti-democratic, anti-human organisation who play totally into the hands of the most reactionary forces in the Spanish state.
We have received a message from ELA, the Christian Democratic trade union centre (linked to the Basque Nationalist Party), with which the STUC has been in contact for several years. Their message states that they `strongly condemn the terrorist attack in Madrid...it is a criminal act against the people of Madrid, with whom ELA declares its deepest solidarity'.
The STUC has sent its sympathy to the Spanish trade union centres, and to the families and friends of all those killed and injured in this outrage."
