Chile Democratico (Scotland)
Public statement On the 30th anniversary of the military coup that brought down the democratic government of president Salvador Allende in Chile on 11 September 1973, and mindful of recent international events and the subsequent domestic debates that have followed, we the undersigned publicly state and declare:
We remember all those thousands of Chileans from all walks of life who were killed, detained, tortured and exiled by Pinochet's brutal regime and express our renewed solidarity with them, their relatives and friends. We support their demands for truth and justice as the necessary building blocks of the new Chile
We pay tribute to the people of Chile who for almost 17 years struggled through the dark days of the military dictatorship to return their country to democratic rule. We also pay tribute to the countless numbers of people in Scotland and throughout the world who supported that struggle
We pledge our on-going support for the cause of democracy, human, civil and political rights everywhere in the world, calling for an end to oppression, discrimination and exclusion of any kind. In doing this, we proclaim the universal and enduring nature of these essential values and call on all sectors of Scottish society to promote them at national and international level
We re-affirm our commitment to providing refuge and asylum to people, like the Chileans who came to Scotland in the mid 1970s, who are fleeing persecution and need a safe haven to rebuild their lives shattered by oppression, war and conflict in their homelands. We value their contribution to Scottish society and the enriching diversity they bring to our country

- We commit ourselves to contributing, in our own way and in our own spheres, to build a more just and equitable world, at local, national and international level. To enable the younger generations and those yet to come to release their full potential and enjoy fulfilling lives. In the words of president Allende: "History is ours and the people make it"
