STUC Union Rep Awards to be presented by First Minister

The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) has announced the recipients of the 2017 STUC Union Rep Awards, which will be presented by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon today (Monday, 24 April 2017) at STUC Annual Congress at 3:15 pm in Aviemore.

The STUC Helen Dowie Award for Lifelong Learning will be presented to Brian Ronald, Unite Union Learning Rep at Rolls-Royce Inchinnan.

The STUC Equality Award will be presented to Sharon Sweeney, UCU Branch President at the University of Dundee.

The STUC Frank Maguire Award for Health and Safety will be presented to the NUJ Newsquest Chapel Committee in Glasgow.

The STUC Organising Award will be presented to the Unite Wood Group (Shell contract) Shop Stewards, who work offshore.

STUC General Secretary, Grahame Smith, said:

“The STUC Union Rep Awards recognise union activists who have excelled in the promotion of the workplace learning agenda, equalities, health and safety and organising within their workplace. This year’s recipients again highlight of the inspirational roles played by union reps in all corners of the trade union movement throughout Scotland.”

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon MSP said:

“I would like to congratulate each of the award winners who have all helped to further the values of the trade union movement in their workplaces. These are just a few examples of the important work being done by trade unions across the country to ensure people get the advice and the support they need, to promote fair work, and to boost inclusive growth led by workplace innovation.”
