NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TUESDAY 27 MAY 2003
Bring the European debate to the people, says STUC General Secretary
Speaking from Prague, where he is attending the Congress of the European Trade Union Confederation, STUC General Secretary, Bill Speirs, said:
"At the ETUC this morning Valery Giscard d'Estang, the Chair of the Convention of the Future of Europe, stated the case for the Convention's proposals for the establishment of a European Union Constitution.
"We, the delegates, then questioned him for an hour, on issues such as the rights of Member States to determine how public services are delivered and the place of full employment as an objective within the proposed Constitution.
"It was a powerful demonstration of the place of the trade union movement in the developing Europe, and I believe that this kind of question and answer session could very usefully be replicated in Scotland."
