STUC WELCOMES NEW CHAIRPERSON
The STUC General Council at its first meeting following last month's Annual Congress gave a warm welcome to its new Chairperson, Sandy Boyle, who will serve until the close of the 2004 Congress in Glasgow in April next year.
Sandy is one of the UK's most senior and respected trade unionists. He is a past President of the National Union of Civil and Public Servants, the major civil service union, and is currently, among other things,- Deputy General Secretary of finance and banking union UNIFI; President of UNI Europa, the organisation of European banking and finance unions, and a member of the UNI World Executive; UK Member of the European Economic and Social Committee; and a member of the Council of Management of the international aid agency, War on Want.
In his spare moments, Sandy is also a resolute supporter of Falkirk FC.
STUC General Secretary Bill Speirs said:
"Having Sandy Boyle as STUC Chairperson is a huge boost to the organisation. He is immensely respected by both workers and employers in the very important finance sector, and by workers and employers in his previous area of operation, the UK Civil Service.
Sandy has a history of commitment to social justice and the trade union movement, in Scotland, in Britain and throughout the world. We are delighted to have him as Chairperson."
