During our discussions in preparation for the launch meeting of the Scotland People’s Assembly, it was generally accepted that the theme of the People’s Assembly was complete opposition to these sweeping draconian measures, but to continue to argue for the alternative case contained within the “Aims and Objectives” of the People’s Charter. The Economic ans Social demands enshrined within the Charter spells out that there is a “Better Way”.
Organisations involved in Scotland who support the alternatives are: STUC, UNITE, Unison, RMT, PCS, FBU, POA, UCU, NUJ, SSAT, MU and the Institute of Employment Rights along with the Campaign for Socialism, The Communist Party, the Morning Star Campaign Committee, SNP, Trade Union Group, Scottish Left Review, Glasgow International, Katy Clark MP, Elaine C Smith, MSP and six Trade Union Councils. ( Dundee and Fife Trade Union Councils have already set up local Assembly Groups).
Ricky Tomlinson ( Shrewsbury 24 Campaign)
Graham Smith (General Secretary STUC)
Andrew Murray (Unite)
John Stevenson (Unison)
Cat Boyd.(Coalition of Resistance)
Anita Wright ( Women’s Assembly against Austerity)
Elaine Smith MSP (Coatbridge and Chryston)
Christine Mc Kelvie MSP
Katy Clark MP
Chair, Phil McGarry (RMT) said, “The Economic Policy of Austerity has failed and a window of opportunity exists to argue that “There is a Better Way”. The people’s Assembly throughout the country has shown the way, and we in Scotland will commit ourselves to mobilise support for Fairness, Justice, Equality and restoration of our Trade Union Rights. It’s time austerity ended”. Further reports shall be issued as they arise in the build up to the formal Scottish People’s Assembly launch.
