Scottish Parliament commends trade union women

November 15th 2012

Anne McTaggart MSP today lodged a Members Motion in the Scottish Parliament, commending the recent Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) Women’s Conference.

“I was delighted to congratulate the STUC Women’s Committee on a fantastic conference. I was thoroughly impressed by the motions submitted and the way in which they were presented – the confidence and passion of the speakers was inspiring. Many reiterated that it is women that are being hit hardest by the Tory led government, but I am proud that our trade unions are defending female workers with all that they have.

I hope colleagues from across the chamber will join me in my congratulations, and wish every success for next year.”

Eileen Dinning, UNISON Scotland Equalities Officer and Chair of the STUC Women’s Committee for the coming year, welcomed the Motion.

“Women from workplaces across Scotland worked together in Perth earlier this week, speaking up for their members and highlighting the devastating impact of some of the UK Government’s policies on lower paid families. Conference welcomed the Scottish Government’s recent commitments on extending the Living Wage. However, delegates spoke out strongly on the need for substantial investment in childcare provision, to support women and men in remaining in work. Our Conference discussed matters that affect us all, and we look forward to working with MSPs across Scotland to improve the lives of working women and their families.”
