STUC on Labour Market Statistics

September 14th 2011

Speaking on publication of the latest set of labour market statistics for Scotland, Grahame Smith, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary said:

“The small fall in ILO unemployment and the significant rise in employment are to be welcomed. However, the claimant count, youth unemployment, long-term unemployment and women’s unemployment all continue to increase.

“The STUC has published an estimate of Scotland’s full-time employment deficit that we believe is a far better reflection of the state of the Scottish labour market: 468,301 people are currently unable to access the full-time employment they need to make ends meet.

“With growth minimal, real wages falling, consumer confidence collapsing and the full effect of spending cuts just beginning to hit the economy, the STUC sees no prospect of sustainable improvement in the Scottish labour market. It is noteworthy that, at UK level, the private sector is creating one job for every 2.7 lost in the public sector”.
