STUC Youth Conference 2011 – A Better Way for Young People

June 24th 2011

The 71st Annual STUC Youth Conference will take place in Glasgow at the STUC Centre, over the coming weekend, Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June, 2011. The Conference takes place during growing uncertainty for young people in Scotland. Over the weekend young trade unionists from across Scotland will debate a number of issues including, youth unemployment, protecting public services, education and housing.

Georgina Wardrop, Chairperson of the STUC Youth Committee said:

“The current Coalition Government is doing little to help young people throughout the UK. Immediately after the Election they abandoned the Future Jobs Fund abandoning the hopes and aspirations of many young people and denying them opportunity to experience the world of work.

“There is little doubt that young people are suffering at the hands of the Coalition Government for the failures of those who caused the crisis. We are putting at risk a lost generation of young people who cannot find work nor homes and many are at risk of becoming migrants in their own country as they search for work and affordable housing where they can start to plan their futures.”

Ian Tasker, STUC Assistant Secretary and Chair to the Youth Committee said:

“The Conference will debate many of the issues that affect young people in our society today and seek to develop their own strategy to support the STUC’s ‘There is a Better Way’ campaign. Without the hope of secure employment, access to good housing and many of the other opportunities older generations have enjoyed, young people face an uncertain future.

“Young trade unionists are the future for the trade union movement and our country, which the Coalition Government should do well to remember as they impose unnecessary severe austerity measures on us all.”
