STUC General Election Manifesto Published

April 15th 2010

Ahead of its Congress next week and the General Election on May 6th, The Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) has today (Thursday 15th April) published its Manifesto for Rebuilding Collective Prosperity.

At the Manifesto’s heart is a challenge to the apparent consensus which prioritises deficit reduction over investment in people and services.

Grahame Smith said: “Whilst there are certainly differences between the political parties on the speed and severity of spending cuts, they appear to share the mistaken view that deficit reduction should be the priority.”

“To achieve a lasting economic recovery we need policies which can bring about a more fundamental rebalancing of the economy than is currently being proposed.

“Despite the understandable cynicism about politics, there has never been a more important time for civic Scotland and its communities to be engaged in the formation of a new vision for collective prosperity in Scotland and across the UK.”
