STUC on GDP figures

January 26th 2010

Commenting on figures published today by the Office for National Statistics which show that the UK economy is estimated to have grown by 0.1% in the final quarter of 2009, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) General Secretary Grahame Smith said:

“The STUC’s fears that the recovery will be very slow and protracted are confirmed by today’s statistics which provide scant comfort for the 200,000 unemployed people currently unemployed in Scotland. On this evidence it is entirely possible that Scotland will remain in recession for a further quarter.

“Future growth is already threatened by withdrawal of monetary and fiscal stimulus measures and the weak global economy. In this context immediate and severe cuts in public spending will almost certainly plunge the economy straight back into recession.
