STUC on labour market statistics

January 20th 2010

Commenting on release of the latest labour market statistics for Scotland, Grahame Smith, (Scottish Trades Union Congress) STUC General Secretary said:

“The STUC is very concerned over the substantial rise in unemployment confirmed in today’s statistics which provide further evidence, if any was needed, that the recovery will be very slow and protracted.

“It is essential that Government at all levels continues to provide effective assistance to those hardest hit by this recession. With the economy and labour market so fragile, it is almost certain that swingeing public spending cuts will provoke a double dip recession, if not a full blown depression. Those who propose such economic masochism are apparently content for the mistakes of previous recessions to be repeated. It will be communities across Scotland who will have to live with the consequences.
