Record redundancies and large rise in youth unemployment present a major challenge and rise in average earnings is caused by largest proportion of those losing work being low paid. The number of employees aged 25 and under fell by over 10% in the past year.
STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer said:
“The pandemic is hitting young workers and the low paid hardest. We need an immediate extension to the furlough scheme and the self-employment support scheme. This must be accompanied by more investment in job creation, particularly in the clean economy and in creating real and sustainable jobs for young workers.”
Foyer said she was alarmed by the increase in zero hours contracts
“It is vital that we reverse the trend towards the use of more zero hours contracts, workers should contact their union or the STUC’s Better than Zero campaign for support."
