Responding to the Prime Minister’s statement in the House of Commons, STUC General Secretary, Roz Foyer said.
“The Prime Minister was clearly desperate to announce some good news today. He may have indicated an outline plan for emerging from lockdown but there are many uncertainties along the way.
“It is essential that we continue to approach every step cautiously particularly with the risks of new variants and the fear that employers will relax their health and safety regimes. We hope that this necessary caution will be reflected in the First Minister’s announcement tomorrow.
“Last year we saw announcements on business support and extensions to furlough trailing behind easing of lockdown announcements. There was nothing preventing the Prime Minister making those announcements today. It is certainly vital in his budget next week, the Chancellor announces long-term furlough support, increases to sick pay and investment in job creation.”
