STUC Comment on the Scottish Parliaments Debte on the Independent Review into Adult Social Care

February 16th 2021

Following the Scottish Parliament’s debate on the Independent Review into Adult Social Care, STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer said:

“A National Care Service comparable to the NHS needs to have at its core, dignity, equality and fair pay for its workers.

“The health secretary announced some useful first steps today in moving towards a pay system which recognises the value, skills and sacrifice of care workers.

“We support the pledge to fast track payment of the Living Wage and the clear indication that a sectoral approach to collectively bargained pay is a key priority.

“None of this can come soon enough for chronically low paid care workers, the majority of whom are women. They need a decent pay rise now. We look to the health secretary and the finance secretary in her budget to find further immediate reward for care workers as these medium term improvements in pay bargaining develop.”
