Shut down non-essential workplaces due to new strain, urges STUC

December 21st 2020

As Scotland prepares to move into Level 4 from Boxing Day, the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) is urging for the closure of non-essential workplaces, such as construction and manufacturing.

Roz Foyer, STUC General Secretary, stated:

“The announcement of a new strain of Coronavirus, that is potentially more infectious, will undoubtably make many people fearful for themselves and their loved ones. Unlike in March of this year, in Level 4 the Scottish Government currently plans on keeping non-essential workplaces, such as construction and manufacturing, open. This cannot be right.

“We are calling for the Scottish Government to rethink this approach. With all the uncertainty around this new strain, we should be taking a cautious approach for all workers until more can be learnt about it.

“We cannot repeat the mistakes of earlier this year, when the Government failed to lockdown early enough. All non-essential workplaces must close from Boxing Day.”
