Re-introduction of controversial internal market clauses again shows U.K. government’s disregard for devolution

The STUC said it was dismayed if not surprised by the UK Government’s intransigence in the face of opposition from the devolved legislatures and the House of Lords.

STUC General Secretary Roz Foyer said:

“Alongside its kamikaze brinkmanship on a No Deal Brexit and risks posed to the Good Friday Agreement, the UK Government has set itself on a collision course with the devolved nations.

“The aspects of the Bill which the House of Lords correctly opposed, now reintroduced, would significantly reduce the powers of the Scottish Parliament, diminishing its agency on key issues such as food and environmental standards. Crucially for trade unions, it would also limit the potential to improve the quality of work through public procurement and to use state aid.”
