STUC Comment on First Minister's Announcement of Financial Support for Self Isolating Workers

September 21st 2020

Commenting on the First Minister’s announcement that financial support will be made available to encourage compliance with self-isolation guidelines, STUC General Secretary, Roz Foyer, said:

“We have lobbied hard on the issue of financial support for self-isolating workers, raising it as recently as last week in meetings with the Scottish Government. We obviously need to consider the detail of any scheme. But the Scottish Government is moving in the right direction with this announcement.

“It is a far better way to go than threatening those on the breadline with draconian fines.

“We have consistently argued for employers to offer full pay for those self-isolating in compliance with government guidelines. So many workers are living from pay cheque to pay cheque and millions across the UK are faced with trying to living on derisory levels of sick-pay. They are being placed in an impossible situation. That is why we are also calling on the UK Government to immediately bring forward plans for a hike in sick-pay for all.”
