Too restrictive and set far too low: STUC response to announcement of support for self-isolating low paid workers

August 27th 2020

Responding to the announcement of £4.55 per hour for low paid self-isolating workers in regional lockdown areas Rozanne Foyer, STUC General Secretary said:

“It is clear what the UK Government is trying to do here, but it is also clear that they will fail in their objectives if the financial support is not more and the scope is not extended to all self-isolating workers.

“We have been warning for months that the Government needs to make sure that people can afford to do what is required by the guidance. Hundreds of thousands of low paid workers live from pay check to pay check. For them, the difference between their normal pay and £130 per week is massive.

“We are calling on the Government to look again at this announcement, increase the rate of support and extend it to all self-isolating workers”
