STUC expresses note of caution on safety and need for further consultation with unions in response to today’s announcement from the Education Secretary regarding new plans for full time school return after the summer break.
“We all want Scotland’s children to go back to school, but only when it is truly safe to do so.
“Much work will be required on re-assessing risks, assessing appropriate levels of PPE and other safety measures. The safety of pupils and staff is imperative, their safety must be at the forefront of any new plans considered by the Scottish Government.
“Janitorial, cleaning staff and support staff, as well as teachers, must be adequately protected and consulted through their unions. We cannot allow complacency in the face of what is still a very real threat to the health of workers, pupils and their families.”
