STUC comments on FM statement on EU Referendum Result

June 24th 2016

Commenting on the First Minister’s statement on the EU Referendum result, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said:

“It is clear that the First Minister wants to set Scotland on the course to a second Independence Referendum. While a second independence referendum will undoubtedly bring added uncertainty, the democratic wishes of the people of Scotland also need to be acknowledged.

“However, it is essential that it is fully recognised that the economic implications of an independent Scotland are different now from those in 2014, with the rest of the UK, our nearest neighbour and biggest trading partner, exiting the EU.

“The STUC values the basic employment rights underpinned by the EU which are now under threat and we will continue, as we have always done, to lobby and bargain for fair and secure work whatever the constitutional implications of today's vote.

“I welcome the reassurance given by the First Minister that EU citizens settled and working in Scotland remain welcome here.

“We look forward to early discussions with the Scottish Government over the economic and social impact of leaving the EU and its role in and approach to Brexit negotiations, including the options open to Scotland to continue its relationship with the EU, how existing EU employment and social protection can be retained and how we can continue to benefit from the valued contribution of EU workers settled in Scotland.”
