STUC on UK Government Zero-hours contracts announcement

June 25th 2014

Commenting on the Government announcement on zero-hours contracts preventing employers from stipulating that their zero-hours staffs are only allowed to work for them, Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) Assistant Secretary Ian Tasker said:

“The STUC welcomes the announcement but it does not address many other issues faced by vulnerable workers forced into this type of contract. The question marks over entitlements such as to paid holidays and pension provisions leave thousands of workers open to abuse and uncertainty about their futures. For zero-hours workers the planning of essentials like childcare and budgets has become a stressful dilemma. Contracts which favour employers to this degree and leave employees with no guarantees for minimum hours or income should have no place in the modern workplace.”
