Trade Union members gather in Inverness to debate referendum

June 13th 2014

Tomorrow (Saturday 14 June) trade union members from across the area will meet in Inverness for the STUC’s annual Highlands and Islands Conference.

Representatives of the Yes and Better Together campaigns will address the conference and then engage in a panel debate responding to questions from the floor. The Conference will also discuss a range of issues including the current state of the highlands and islands economy and labour market and trade union organising priorities.

Speaking ahead of the Conference, Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary said:

“The STUC Highlands and Islands Conference has a history of lively and participative debate and I’m sure that will again be the case tomorrow when the referendum is debated. This is an excellent opportunity for both campaigns to make the case for why their constitutional preference will improve the lives of people across the highlands and islands. The delegates will, as always, provide a searching interrogation of both cases”.
