40th Anniversary of the Ford Equal Pay Strike

On 7 June 1968, 850 female machinists at the Ford factory in Dagenham went on strike to demand the same pay as male employees. The women's action paved the way for the Equal Pay Act two years later. Four decades on the pay gap is still a major issue.

'The Ford sewing machinists paved the way for equal pay legislation that brought welcome change for thousands of women. Forty years ago, job advertisements regularly featured different rates for men and women. This is now unthinkable. The women remain an inspiration to us today and we need to retain that spirit. '

An event is being held to commemerate the 40th anniversary at 6.00 pm on Thursday 27th November 2008 in the Centre for Contemporary Arts, 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow.

There wil be more information in the next edition of the ebrief.
